Finished: 15mm Ming Chinese "Red Hat" Horse Archers

And another unit is completed for my Ming Chinese army. The three bases I painted this weekend complete the first full cavalry unit for FoGR.

And a quick pic with the base I painted previously (on the right):

Of the three medium cavalry units I've started, I like this colour scheme best.

Sunday Workbench 15 October

You've had a plethora of posts this week, so there isn't a huge amount to talk about today. I have finished painting the "red hat" cavalry, given them a Klear/ink coat, varnished them and stuck them onto their bases:

I'll be adding the basing texture shortly, then will finish the basing tomorrow night - if you're lucky that will mean a "finished" post tomorrow night.

Now that I have a good base of Ming troops for ADLG finished, I might take a break from them for a week or so and paint something else. I still have the various Seven Years War command groups that I owe people to paint up, so that will probably be what I go with - just a handful of figures, but they are all different nations (and in one case "imaginations") which means all different uniforms.

It's SELWG show next Sunday which I am likely to be going to - if I do there will be a couple of posts (pics of games, swag) from that rather than a Sunday Workbench.

Saturday Update 14 October

Instead of leaping straight into painting the "red hat" cavlary, I decided to do something long overdue this afternoon - finishing assembly and painting of the Sarissa corner store and warehouse. The lower parts of the warehouse still look a bit too clean - I might have to go over them with another dirty wash at some point.

Sometime in the future I'll need to make up some signs for the businesses. I've got a couple of ideas for those.

This evening I've started work on the "red hat" cavalry. Well, their horses at any rate:

Once the brown wash has dried I'll do the white markings, eyes and the tack. And maybe touch up the riders with Sky Grey where the browns have slopped onto them. Tomorrow I'll carry on with the riders - with just the 9 of them, I might even manage to get the painting finished.

Finished: 15mm Korean "Pikemen" and "Swordsmen"

I actually got a bit further with the Koreans last night than I'd anticipated, which left me with just the drybrushing and flocking to do this evening. And here they are:

"Pikemen"

In ADLG, the bulk of Korean melee infantry are classified as "mediocre pikemen" rather than medium infantry with two-handed weapons that they are in FoGAM and FoGR. This does make them tougher, but slower and less manoeuvrable.

Doing the basing texture was a bit more awkward than with the Ming Chinese as the figures are quite crowded on the bases. I was using a syringe with a wide-bore needle to apply the paint/PVA mix but decided after a couple of bases to thin it down a little. Big mistake - that meant it wicked up through the sand making it stick much deeper. Lesson learned for when I do the next batch.

"Swordsmen"

In ADLG the elite melee foot are "heavy infantry swordsmen two-handed weapon" - tough, slow but not as unmaoeuvrable as the pikemen.

This weekend I'll crack on with another Ming Chinese unit, probably the "red hat" horse archers.

Thursday Update 12 October

Just a quick update tonight. I finished painting that batch of Koreans last night and gave them a Klear/ink coat just before going to bed. This evening I airbrushed matt varnish on, then brushed on satin varnish to a few details (weapons, sash, tassels), pinged them off the painting sticks, sorted them into groups and glued them onto bases:

I've got four figures left over which will get added to the remaining pack when it arrives and has been painted to do the final two pikemen bases and the second elite "swordsmen" base.

A bit later, when the superglue has fully dried, I'll edge and basecoat the bases with my craft khaki grey mix. Tomorrow I'll add the basing texture but it will take a while to dry enough for drybrushing and flocking, so that will have to get done on Saturday.

Finished - 15mm Ming Chinese Spear & Crossbow Unit

In my Tuesday post I said I'd go with either the additional 3 bases of "red hat" horse archers or a spear & crossbow unit. As you can see, I went with the spear & crossbow unit. As I need to take at least one of these as "poor" in FoGR I needed to work out a way of easily distinguishing them from "average" units. I decided to achieve this by making the coat and hat colour the same (and muted). The officer and musician get a bit of colour to make up for the drabness of their troops.

"Enough with the blurb!" I hear you cry out, "We want pics!".

These were finished (including flocking) very late on Saturday, then I took photos on Sunday morning.

As you will have seen from my post yesterday, I've started work on some Korean infantry to make up the first "pikemen" bases for ADLG. I should have them done later this week.

Sunday Workbench 08 October

Since finishing the Ming light foot bowmen, I've managed to paint up another Ming unit. I've taken the pics and scheduled a post to go up tomorrow night.

Today I've started work on the next batch of figures - some Korean infantry. Just a small batch of 53...

As you can see, I've made pretty good progress already - the pic was taken at 2.30pm and I should manage to get a few more steps done later on today. The next step is quite a big one - going over all the areas that will be white or red with Sky Grey (mainly to touch up the bits that got black or dark grey slopped onto them).

This batch will give me my first four "pikemen" bases and my first base of elite heavy foot 2HW troops, with a few left over for the last two pike and second elite HF 2HW troops when the pack which is on back-order arrives.

During the week I decided to prep the flags that I'd received from LBMS. I messed up a couple, but still have plenty to go around.

Flags still to be added to units and commanders
I've added flags to the units with that will have them and to the commander's flag bearer:

Hmmm, there's a sneak preview of the unit that will be posted tomorrow there.

That's it for this week. Once the Koreans are done I'll probably paint up the "red hat" horse archers and after them perhaps the heavy cavalry archers.

Update

A bit more progress on the Koreans - Sky Grey, red bits and black metal done.

Tomorrow I should get the white and leather done, maybe the bases as well if things go well.

Finished: 15mm Ming Chinese Light Bowmen

Yes, well, another "Finished" post one day after the last. On Sunday night I painted the coats of the light foot bowmen, then carried on yesterday and got everything done apart from drybrushing and flocking the bases. I did that this morning. These were an exceptionally quick group to paint.

And onto the pics:

Next up will be either the "red hat" horse archers or a spear & crossbow unit which will get me close to having a Ming ally list for FoGR; however, on checking I've found out that I also need at least one spear & handgun unit and that at least one each of the spear & bow and spear & crossbow units have to be taken as "poor" (in both the ally and main lists). That means that I'll probably need to order some more of archers and crossbows.

The pack of Korean heavy horse archers I was waiting for arrived yesterday and I got them prepped and washed. I glued the horses onto painting sticks and riders onto horses this morning, then primed them this afternoon.

Finished: 15mm Ming Chinese Spear & Dao Unit

These figures are proving very quick and easy to paint, which is good. the basing method I've switched to is also a lot quicker than the one I was using for the Koreans (and looks better too).

This is the first 6-base spear & dao unit for FoGR or three spear & dao units for ADLG. I've got another two units waiting in the wings to be painted.

As you can see I decided to go with red trim on the blue coats. The blue was a roughly 2:1 mix of Dark Blue Grey (VMC 904; not to be confused with Dark Bluegrey, VMC 867) and Flat Blue (VMC 962).

Sunday Workbench 01 October

Yesterday saw me priming all the prepped figures from my last post over two airbrush sessions. I also finished the Ming spear & dao unit today - I'll be doing a "finished" post tomorrow for those.

Well, here's what I've got primed and waiting in the wings for the Ming Chinese and Choson Koreans:

Choson Korean Infantry

These will be for the pike bases - I'm still waiting for the second pack of 24 I ordered a couple of weeks ago. I might make a start on them once I've painted a couple more Ming units.

Ming Chinese

Back to front: Generals; two 6-base spear & crossbow units; one 6-base armoured spear& dao unit (medium or heavy foot); one 6-base spear & bow unit.
Alongside: 9 Ming horse archers to add three bases to the "red hats" base I paitned last week to give a 4-base unit for FoGR. I have two more packs on back-order which will eventually take the "blue hats" and "green hats" up to 4-base units.

Back to front: spare command figures; two sticks of spear & bow/crossbow/handgun front rank figures (I will need to order a pack of bow/crossbow/handgun to complete them); two 6-base spear & dao units; two 6-base units of light foot bow

I've decided that the next lot of figures to hit my painting desk will be two 6-base units of light foot bowmen. That's all I'll need for FoGR and a lot more than I'll need for ADLG. I've got the next two days off work, so might get them finished before I return to work.

The pack of armoured bow cavalry I ordered a few weeks ago has been dispatched and should be here on Monday or Tuesday. I should get them prepped and primed before the weekend. Of course, I'll need to order another three packs to make up three 4-base units for FoGR.

I also need to get some artillery for the Ming Chinese, but can't find anybody who makes it. I have found earlier Chinese artillery from Irregular - I might order a few packs to get the crew figures. There are also rocket troops from Grumpy, but as they are only available from Eureka I might need to wait until Salute next year to get them.
